High School Football Player Sustains Serious Spinal Injury in Game

AMARILLO, Texas — A Tascosa High School football player, Derrion Howard, is hospitalized following a severe spinal injury sustained during a game. The injury occurred on a touchdown run with 5:26 remaining in the first quarter. After the incident, Howard was transported by ambulance to the hospital.

According to family members, Howard suffered a significant spinal injury and spent two days in the intensive care unit (ICU). His mother, Lynette Lynch, reported that he currently has no feeling in his legs but is able to feel his toes. Medical professionals have informed the family that he may never return to playing football.

“This is very emotional for him. It has been his dream since fourth grade to play in the Super Bowl,” said Lynch. Howard was expected to announce his college football commitments on November 20. Despite the severity of his injury, he expressed to the media that he found solace in the fact that his last play was a touchdown.

The Tascosa Rebels, with a record of 5-5, are set to play against El Paso Americas, who hold a 3-6 record, in the Bi-district round of the playoffs on Thursday. Lynch mentioned that her son hopes to receive permission from doctors to accompany the team during the game. Regardless of the situation, Howard is determined to support his teammates. “Go Rebs! Go win state!” he stated.

This incident marks the second case of a high school football player in Amarillo being paralyzed within a two-week period, highlighting the increasing concern surrounding safety in high school sports. Aaren Woods, a senior defensive back from Palo Duro High School, suffered a similar fate during the fourth quarter of a game on November 1.

The Tascosa High School community is rallying around Howard, as many are concerned about his recovery and future. Fundraising efforts are underway to assist his family with the associated medical costs and to support his rehabilitation journey. Community members are encouraged to contribute to a GoFundMe campaign set up for Howard, reflecting the solidarity among students, faculty, and local residents in this challenging time.

Family members and friends remain optimistic about Howard’s long-term prognosis. His case has drawn attention to the potential risks associated with high school football. As the sport continues to evolve, discussions around player safety are becoming increasingly prominent. Many in the community hope that this incident will lead to more rigorous safety protocols and preventive measures to protect young athletes.
